NOTES:

From the factory, Toyota uses a crush sleeve (crushable spacer) to set pinion bearing preload. Under heavy load — towing, big tyres, lockers, low-range torque — the crush sleeve can compress further, which:

• Reduces pinion bearing preload

• Lets the pinion move backward

• Causes whining, heat, and premature wear

• Can destroy the pinion bearings and even the ring & pinion

A solid spacer does not compress, so the preload stays stable.
